Again, I wanted to bring Cathy on the next section of the Bel Del she had’nt walked with
me, between Belvidere and Phillipsburg. We left our car in Belvidere, and my grandmother
drove us to Brainards, where we could leave Bode’s Volkswagon, then headed to
Phippipsburg’s Union Square.
I had not yet walked the section of the railroad from Union Square to the north end of
Phillipsburg near Marble Hill, so this would fill in a bit of a gap for me as well.
We began at first paralleling South Main Street atop a wall, then through the industrial
areas where tracks broke off in different directions. We stopped a couple times to check
out some interesting things, like a brick laid little tunnel, and the Phillipsburg Pump
House, which had been recently restored.
The views from the Bel Del along the Delaware on our way north were beautiful. I had
missed these views the previous trip because it was dark by the time we’d reached this
point. Doing the hike backwards certainly helped this time!
When we reached Brainards, we crossed the Delaware on the Martins Creek Branch of
the DL&W which goes north to Bangor (Bangor and Portland Branch), to see the views.
After crossing back, we checked out the old station ruins site, then headed north, saying
our goodbyes to Bode as we reached his car. As we continued north, Cathy did very well.
Her feet only really began to hurt her badly when we reached Belvidere.
