I unfortunitely lost this original journal to the fire...so if anyone finds it let me know!
For this hike I had wanted to do the section of the Highlands Trail from Rt 23 to Clinton Road and beyond to the NY/NJ state line. We met at the state line and shuttled cars south to Rt 23.
The beginning of the hike was great on the way up to Dunker Pond. Along the pond we witnessed a turtle laying eggs which was incredible.
We continued on, and the outlet of the pond looked unnatural, such a perfect flume outward. We continued to Clinton Resevoir and followed the west shore. When we got to a nice cove we took a great swim. Only one boater was able to see us.
The HT took us across a beaver dam that separated the resevoir with their impoundment to the north. It was wet but we were able to get across. In 2010 the HT would be routed away from this place. We continued through laurel thickets and over an outcropping above the resevoir before descending to Clinton Road. We continued on the HT until we got to Bearfort Fire Tower. From here, we continued on the ridge following the westernmost ridgetop trail of the Pequannock Watershed all the way to Terrace Pond. We took a swim, and then just as we got out of the water it started pouring down rain. We made our way along Terrace Pond North Trail in the rain for some time. When we reached the power line section we followed the flagging of a future reroute of the trail to new viewpoints, and then down to Hamburg Turnpike. We crossed, but I think we opted to follow the connector trail east to West Milford because it was going to get dark quick. I think Joel and I were the only ones to really complete the hike. He went ahead walking the road back to the state line, and I ran to catch up with him. Everyone else waited for us at the West Milford A&P.
