The journal entry to this one was lost to the fire too. If you have a copy please let me know!
For this hike, it was by far a more interesting route, something totally new, as far as the Musikfest hikes go. We started right in Bethlehem as I recall, and walked by Laura's house. We made our way down into Bethlehem and stopped at a yard sale along the way as well!
We wandered down across the Hill to Hill Bridge into South Bethlehem, and then onto the abandoned railroad bed through town that was the future route of the South Bethlehem Greenway trail. At this time nothing had been done yet, it was just an old rail bed through town.
We headed along this and found some interesting abandoned building to the left which we of course had to go in. We then went along the edge of a large rail yard and continued on the former Reading Railroad line south into Hellertown area. There was a major washout in this section I'd seen on my previous visit, but it had'nt yet been repaired.
Just as we neared the main part of Hellertown there was a giant abandoned concrete stucture to the right, so I of course had to try to climb up into it. Shelly soon joined me but we could'nt get up very far.
We returned to the rail bed which took us south toward town, and we took a side trip on a trail that went a bit closer to the Saucon Creek, then returned to the rail bed. I think we must have followed it to Friedensville Road. There was an historic house on the left shortly after turning (and a side road called Duh Road!).
From here we made our way onto a piece of wooded property, grassy at first but then weeds, and we came out on a mowed path along a corn field. This was of course a dream come true for John Spiridon as he ate a few cobbs.
We continued on these mowed trails northbound until we came to just about as far as we could go. We then went left and then right to get out to a road. We ended up going under Rt 78 on a road, then immediately on the other side followed an incredibly steep trail up hill onto South Mountain. Many mountain biking trails, complete with some wood work over rocks and all, scattered across the entire area. It was hard for us to figure out where we should be. I remember we went west for a bit and eventually we ended up on Mountain Drive. The trail paralleled it way up on an embankment for a bit before coming down. I think some of it was an older road.
We crossed the road and went south briefly, then behind some building that I think was for PBS or WLTV or something, and then got on another trail in back of it. This took us further along the ridge with a little view of Bethlehem from a utility line. Somehow we ended up getting lower down on the hill and came out to a road somewhere. Laura then showed us to a little hidden spot known as the Mystic Garden, a sort of art garden around Lehigh University. It was full of all sorts of great sculptures and weird things. We wandered around for a while and then headed onward.
I was trying to get us to the star of Bethlehem to see the view, but little did I know we were about a quarter a mile away when we were on the hillside. We next went up to a building in Lehigh U that was supposed to have a great view from the top. Unfortunitely when we got there the place was closed because they were having a memorial service for a dead teacher up top. The security guard was pretty cool though, and said we if we were to walk up to the cafeteria viewing area he would'nt stop us...so off we went.
When we got to that area, we eventually got kicked out but at least got to admire the view a bit.
We walked back down into Bethlehem from here, and when we got into the main area with buildings we went inside a great old church. We continued from there and stopped for ice cream as I recall. After that we headed into Musikfest and wandered around for a bit more. We took in some shows, and Mr. Buckett, Shelly, and I, and I don't know who else, went to a great Jimi Hendrix tribute show to finish the night off.
