Hike #432 8/11/9
8/11/9 Port Colden/Point Mountain Loop with Skyler Jermyn, Sue Zeleznik, and Alyssa Capo.
Along the riverside trail at Point Mountain
My next hike would be another spur of the moment trip beginning at my house to do a long loop. Joining me at first was Skyler Jermyn and Sue Zeleznik (who had'nt come on one of my hikes in a couple years), and by the time we reached Port Murray we were joined by Alyssa Capo who also had'nt been out in some time! We began walking from my house to the railroad tracks heading east. It was nice at first, but it started raining pretty hard and we took a break under the brick yard road bridge just west of Port Murray (1). Alyssa was waiting for us in Port Murray, so when she joined us we tried to walk across the ruins of the old creamery, but I opted not to head that way because there was a lot of poison ivy and she had on sandles. We walked up to Port Murray Road and headed down toward Point Mountain, viewing a beautiful rainbow along the way (2,3). We headed down Point Mountain Road and crossed the old truss bridge to pick up the blue riverside trail heading toward Penwell (4,5).
Rosan Fields at Point Mountain, Penwell side
We walked on down to Penwell and took a long swim in the Musconetcong River, and used the rope swings that had recently been restored (6,7). We then walked back to the Rosan lot of Point Mountain and headed across the fields to the orange blazed ridge trail (8-11) and followed it to the main view point, which was spectacular at dusk with the clouds hovering along the valley below (12-19). We moved on and took the white blazed trail I think it was out across the south section to lead to what used to be the Shields farm and Mountain Top Road. We followed Mountaintop Road to my grandfather's house where we stopped in for a visit, and he gave us pizzas and ice cream, and showed us videos of his barbershop music (20-23). When we left, we headed down Hollow Road to River Road, then up Changewater Road to McCollough Road back to Port Colden. It was a lovely night for a walk!
