For this one, an annual Musikfest Hike, we would head in from Whitehall Mall in Allentown Area. The plan at the beginning was to walk along the Jordan Creek, which as per my map had a park system around it, but there were no trails to be found. I think we must have walked Mickley Run and other roads parallel instead for quite a while. We did end up finding a nice old grist mill and a box duct taped to a utility pole.
The Tall One thought she knew the way east from here, and so she led the way toward the Lehigh. Along the way it started pouring rain so we sought refuge at a guy's house who was having a yard sale. We helped him carry his goods into his garage and then hung out there for the worst of it to pass. We then headed down hill to the former Lehigh Valley Railroad tracks. and turned left, north.
The railroad tracks ran along a chain link fence, which blocked in an industrial area along the river. There was a hole in it where we could get through to get to the Lehigh trestle we liked to jump off of previous times. I ran through the hole and scouted it out to see if anyone was working, and there was not, so everyone sneaked through. When we got on the trestle, it was still drizzling, and no one wanted to jump in. Only DJ Ray and I were crazy enough to do it!
We continued heading across the bridge, then turned onto the active railroad on the other side south to the canal park.
We stopped for a while here, and climbed into the fish ladder, which was really tough with all of the current, and then let it jettison us out of it. Quite fun. We then went out to the middle of the river where a giant log was hung up on the middle of the dam. We climbed up the dam on the log and then slid down like a sliding board for quite a while as well.
When we'd had enough here, we continued on the towpath toward Bethlehem. We took one more break at a small shelter, and another dip in the river. It was surprisingly shallow enough here that we could walk all the way across it easily.
We continued on from here to Bethlehem. Once there I got myself a pulled pork sandwich next to the old CNJ station, and then we went swimming in the Monocacy Creek Aqueduct like we'd done so many times before.
After this we wandered to the Hill to Hill Bridge where Mr. Buckett had parked his van with some beers in it. We hung out there for a while as well, drinking his "Orangebum" I think it was, interesting good beer. We were joined by David Noble and one of his friends while tailgating, and he and Sharon got pretty friendly...lol.
It seems like we must have wandered through Musikfest for hours, and I ended up losing people along the way. I just layed down in the middle of main street and waited for everyone to get back together. Most of us had been drinking pretty heavily, and Mr. Buckett allowed Commando Tom to drive his van to get us all back since he was alright. It was a hilarious ride, with Mr. Buckett constantly turning the music up while Commando Tom was trying to concentrate, a huge load of hikers piled into the back.
This was also a sad night because it was Skyler's last hike with us before moving to Texas to further his education and pursue a job with video game design. We would'nt see him again until his legendary visit in the Summer of 2009.
