Hike #61

At Minsi Lake with Kirkridge, part of the Kittatinny Ridge in view
Hike 61
7/5/2
Having enjoyed the Upper Mt Bethel area railroads hike with Peeps and Tea Biscuit so
much earlier in the year, I wanted to bring Cathy on it as well. Eric Pace was also
particularly fascinated by this section, and joined us as well.

We traveled the same way we did previously, until we reached the area near Lake Poco,
where we tried to get to the right of way more closely. We ended up walking too far north
for the right of way, and found an old dam. After crossing the dangerous frame of a bridge
over the structure, we found that we had to recross as we had gone the wrong way.
All went free of incident on the way to Minsi Lake, and we decided to walk along the
Minsi Lake dam to get a better view. Unfortunitely, the little store we stopped at last time
was closed as the owners were on vacation, so we had to ration our water for some time.

When we reached PA Rt 191, we continued on the LNE right of way rather than walking
the highway as we did previously, and found the railbed to be completely clear and
pleasant walking. The junction with the southbound line was at a road crossing, which I
believe may have even been called “Junction Road”, and we followed the railbed south
into Roseto. It was clearly walkable most of the way, and when we reached the downtown
area, a piece of the right of way was now a little linear park within town, with a weaving
paved path. This came out onto Rt 191, the “Welcome to Roseto Borough” sign right on
the right of way. We walked the railbed/Rt 191 into Bangor and stopped for food and
drinks. It was surprising that there were no shops in Roseto itself.

When we reached the active tracks back towards Portland, Eric began falling behind. He
was uncharacteristically energetic earlier on, walking far ahead of Cathy and I for a time.
When we reached an industrial area, I think it’s called Johnsonville, we found a small mini
mart/general store to stop at as well.

It was just beginning to get dark when we reached Portland, however we were still feeling
comfortable and not so done in as on other hikes.
