For this hike, I thought it appropriate to do the hike along the LHR from Tranquility
again, only finishing in Oxford NJ to take part in the annual heritage day festival. My
grandmother dropped Tea Biscuit, Eric Pace, and I off in the morning, and in the rain.
Grammie gave us granola bars immediately, and we pulled on our rain ponchos. Heading
south, a fence had been erected over the right of way, though it was already falling in.
All went smoothly on the way south through Allamuchy. We stopped in at the old frieght
station, and climbed around under Rt 80 as we always do. When we reached the Alphano
Flats and sod farms, the right of way was very clear, and some of the parts we were a bit
uneasy about in the past appeared to be totally abandoned. In addition, the right of way
nearing the Great Meadows station had also been cleared a bit.

While we were in Great Meadows, we decided to make a detour trip up Rt 46 and
stopped in a little deli for lunch. We then made our way back towards the right of way. On
the way, I climbed up an abandoned silo, and Tea Biscuit and I went into an abandoned
barn. We had to pull ourselves up to get to the second floor. Tea Biscuit went up first.
Before I had a chance to even try to climb up, he already began smashing crates by
throwing them to the bottom level. After goofing off a bit more here, we headed
southwest along the right of way through fields and woods. Tea Biscuit was constantly
listening to crazy music on his cd player, while Eric questioned me about the different
railroads, as he has an infinite curiosity regarding them.
As we headed south, we fought through spider webs on our way into Pequest Wildlife
Management Area’s section of the railbed.
When we reached Oxford, there were quite a lot of festivities going on. Rich Pace was
helping out at the Boy Scout Troop 1954 Funnel Cake stand, along with plenty of others I
knew from my time in the troop, so we bought funnel cakes and chatted a bit. We also met
up with Mike Ayers who I graduated with, and wandered around with him a bit. We made
several laps around Oxford, and chatted with our friend “Generic Eric” Steinmetz and his
wife, Lucy. There were Civil War reinactments going on, a large race, and all sorts of
other stuff going on. We hung out until dark when Peeps and his then girlfriend, Sam
showed up, and we hung out with them. We also talked a bit to a guy we called “Mo Mo”
whom I attended community college with. We stayed and watched the fireworks, then got
a ride home.
