Hike #55; Sarepta to Washington

 Hike #55

Hike 55

In the fields of Belvidere

So crazy to look back at these old hike journals. At the time, it was a struggle having a core group. The original group from high school pretty much moved on, and at the time it was'nt intended to be a long term group, no one knew. The newer generation with Cathy, Ron, Peeps, Alf, and Tea Biscuit, as well as a few others, but no one who came out every time, would attend spuratically. So many of the times it would just be myself and Cathy or Tea Biscuit out exploring. At the time, I did'nt know that this would turn into something so important to so many people. I'm glad I kept it going....

For another weekday hike, Cathy came with me to do the hike from Sarepta thru

Belvidere to Washington.

My grandmother dropped us off in Sarepta, and we began following the Bel Del south

behind Hoffman LaRoche as always. I was concerned because we were heading through

some thick Poison Ivy, but amazingly Cathy did not break out in any by the end of the

day! With the rain we had recieved recently, it was tougher to pass through this section

because the river was high enough that we needed to stay on the steep hillside. Beyond

this point in the former Hercules site, streams flowing on the Pennslyvania side made

beautiful little waterfalls.

We reached Belvidere, and on the dead end street we came out of from Hercules, we

stopped and talked with a woman who lived there for quite a long time, and she showed

us around her garden. She apparently had few visitors on this back street, and was

delighted to talk to us. We moved on and stopped at Skoogy’s, then walked the Bel Del to

the LHR line as always. On the east side of Belvidere, the developement that had been

started on the right of way had came along quite a bit. Several houses were already

standing, and a path close to the location of the right of way was already partially in place.

Still, there was a great deal of construction going on. We made our east without incident.

When we reached Buttsville, there was construction going on on an old truss bridge the

road crosses next to the right of way, so we walked across to view the progress. Much of

the bridge’s decking was removed and open.

We made our way south to Washington rather quickly.

Here's all of the pics from this hike:
