Hike #48
Hike 48

The Lackawanna Ave culvert, now destroyed, Hampton NJ.
3/8/2
For my next hike, I had been wanting to bring Cathy on my hike from Crestmoore for
some time, and with a weekday off between the two of us, at least I think it was a
weekday, we set out. I also contacted Bode again to see if he would like to meet us along
the way.

I think it was my grandmother who dropped us off in Crestmoore and we headed west on
the old High Bridge Branch of the CNJ, passing through Vernoy (and petting a little dog),
and Califon, stopping in at Rambo’s store. Passing through the Ken Lockwood Gorge also
went well, and when we reached
High Bridge we met up with Bode, driving his red Porche.
From here we headed north on the old CNJ main line, Bode talking to Ron Rice on the
phone as we walked; Ron R was planning on meeting up with us as well.
When we reached Glen Gardner, Ron caught up with us and parked near a quarry. The
three of us then continued north to Hampton and the former junction with the DL&W. We
continued to Hampton Pizza where Cathy left her Honda, and Bode, Ron, and I continued
through the Hampton Cut along the Old Main DL&W, doing the same as we always had,
descending in New Hampton and rejoining the right of way at Dutch Hill Road.
Ron and Bode did not want to continue when we reached Changewater, so we called
Cathy on Bode’s cell to pick us up. When Cathy arrived, we decided to first climb to the
top of the northern Lackawanna Trestle pier. The view from this point was fantastic, and
one could easily picture what it must have looked like before the trestle was removed in
1955. Ron made his way onto the scary narrow end of the pier to take better pictures. We
descended and drove Bode and Ron back to their cars.
