This next hike would be the next in the series of trips to continue hiking the NJ coast. This time we would start near where we left off, beginning the hike at the Belmar train station. Some participants came in on the train, while others drove in. Joining me this time were "Major Tom" Conroy, "Naaron" Young, Jim "Mr. Buckett" Mathews (I rode with these three in Major Tom's car), David Noble, Jason Itell, Jaque De Melo, Yon Lee, Shelly Janes, "Amish Paul" and Wyatt Hassler, Tom Petrucci, "DJ Ray" Cordts, Christina Manley, Matt "Henry" Fenimore, Eric Pace (who joined later), and newcomers Ulrike Pfeffermann, Mihaila Serban, Jeannie Amon, and Jaime Mezza (who was profiled in "Driving Jersey" seaside heights episode, and came by recommendation of film maker Steve Rogers. We began walking, once the group was together, from the train station to the main street, heading south. We were laughing and yelling and carrying on along the way, and we screamed in front of the no noise ordinance sign, which was funny! Pretty soon, Herny joined us on the street, catching up from either his parents or grandparents house, I don't remember which. Together, we all walked to Lake Como, and followed the north shore of it out to the beachfront. We headed out to the beach to begin walking south. We continued on rather quickly through Spring Lake down to Brielle, along the way stopping to take a quick swim near a jetti. It was freezing cold! I was first to jump in, followed by DJ Ray, Wyatt, and Naaron as I recall. Heading south, we eventually reached the outlet of the Manasquan River where we took a good break. While everyone was sitting around, I headed out to the end of the jetti along the river outlet and climbed to the top of a beacon tower at the end; a not very sturdy small frightening tower which I could barely fit through the port hole in the top. I took some pictures and then came down. I then climbed around on some weird shaped concrete pilings that made up part of the far end of the jetti. Soon, we headed upstream along the Manasquan from the jetti onto a walkway. We continued walking along the side of the waterway, and then cut into a small beach area in what is referred to as Fisherman's Cove Natural area. It was rather pretty. We walked as far as we could before we reached a marshy estuary, then followed along the edges of the waterfront out to some sort of a trail leading us in to Brielle Road, just south of Manasquan. We turned left, then crossed the over century old Glimmer Glass Drawbridge, a Bascule bridge of French design that used interesting counterweights to lift. We crossed over and then turned left on Green Avenue. We followed streets, crossed the NJ Transit tracks, then made our way to Union Avenue/Rt 35 and crossed over the Manasquan. We entered Ocean County, Point Pleasant, and turned left on Broadway, stopping at Gull Island Park. There was I think a 7-11 across the street, so we went in for refreshments before leaving. Eric Pace, as if by destiny (I would'nt go that far) found us here, and joined us for the remainder of the hike. We returned the way we came in, crossing the Manasquan along Rt 35, and then following roads back across the Glimmer Glass, then headed out to the oceanfront walkways. We headed north, having to turn back in to the beach twice between Manasquan and Belmar (once was for the military installation). We also observed the Sea Girt lighthouse, which I did'nt even notice until someone pointed it out! The last stretch along the shore was on boardwalk before coming back to Lake Como and Panzienza Park, where we followed the south shore of the lake back to the main street in Belmar. We continued north back to the trail station, and Jaime, Ulrike, Mihaila and David cut out early. The rest of us walked up the street, at Henry's recommendation to a great little place in northern Belmar. We had some dinner and laughed and carried on, and I continued to get totally obliterated because I did'nt have to drive! We were there for a couple hours, and it was a great time. We still had to walk back to the train station from here (we did 20.5 miles by the end), and when we arrived DJ Ray was blowing off an air horn, which did'nt go over well with local police who apprehended and confiscated it! Fortunitely he did'nt get a ticket! All in all, a wonderful day at the Jersey Shore.
