Newark at night, after taking the train to there from jersey City

We met in the morning in Belleville Park where we'd passed through before on the previous sectiong a few weeks prior. Joining me this time were David Noble, "DJ Ray" Cordts, Christina Manley, Chris Herbig, Shelly Janes, Haobo Lai, Jean Fletcher, and joining later would be Ira Gardner and Mike Salender. We began walking from Bellville Park among the blooming Cherry Blossoms which were incredible. We walked to where we split the previous time, at a bridge over the brook. We continued on the co aligned Liberty-Water Gap Trail and Lenape Trail which had yellow blazes here to the south. The trail took us along Cherry Blossoms, then down along the brook more closely. It made it's way back up and alongside an upscale restaurant. From here we crossed a bridge I think and began descending into Newark's Branch Brook Park. The trail took us across a road and on a circuitous route around a field in Branch Brook Park among many more Cherry Blossoms. There was one in particular that was fantastic right near the road. A couple walking by was good enough to take a picture for us. We continued around to what must have been the park headquarters with signs stating that the cherry blossom festival was to start the next day. I got a call here from Ira Gardner who had just gotten off the train and was looking for us to join us. As it turned out, he was within site of us near the building and I waved at him until he finally saw me to join. Once we were all together, we continued along following the blazes under a road bridge and near Branch Brook Park station (built on the Morris Canal) heading south. The parkway was quite nice, and the scenery constantly changed. We passed through playgrounds, along ponds and lakes and through wooded areas. The blazing was still pretty obvious so we had no trouble. When we were out of sight from the road, we started drinking some beers, the only opportunity during the hike we really had to do so! The park led us south passing along side waterfront, and then into the last narrow stretch of park there was a building and a crosswalk over Rt 280 I think it was as well as railroad tracks (which I think was the Lackawanna Boonton Branch at one time, but not totally sure). We crossed over and walked a block north, looking for yellow Lenape Trail blazes. They were still on the poles along the road, but at low levels rather than the standard eye level. Once we realized the blazes were at that lower level, we continued on. I spotted the trail turning down another road into a rather rough looking neighborhood. We passed a liquor store and David went in to get some Jack Daniels and diet cokes. He shared some of the Jack with me, which I put into a Nestea I think it was. We soon came to a gas station that had some restrooms so we made a stop. Everyone took turns going in which took a while, but that was fine. It was a good break. We continued down the road and checked out a building that was in the process of being demolished. While watching the building however, we missed a turn on the trail. We had to turn back and head down this road which took us to James Street I think, a nice street with trees in the sidewalk. We followed this to where the yellow blazes ended at Washington Park. We crossed the street and entered the park, wandering over to a big statue of George Washington. There was a guy there that was surprised that we were hiking for so long. There were no blazes on the Liberty-Water Gap Trail from here to the end, but I knew the route. The guy told us how to take care of it, and we took a break once we knew what we were doing. I ran to pee behind a dumpster down the street. There's hardly anywhere to go, and I could have gotten in trouble, but fortunitely was'nt caught. I also tried to discreetly pour some wine into a small bottle as I recall. Once we were all ready, we headed from the park down Broad Street into Military Park, a very old city park. We did'nt realize it from walking through, but upon studying Google Earth, there was a silouhette of a huge sword from an arial view of the park. We continued southeast through the park and turned left on Raymond Blvd heading to Newark Penn Station. We went into the station and took a break. We used the restrooms, and I was still drinking quite a lot, and feeling way woozy. As we were leaving Penn Station, there were three or four cops coming in, asking what we were doing. Fortunitely they did not attempt to smell my breath. Haobo was very helpful in helping me find the route we needed to follow in this area. We walked down Ferry Street on the other side of Penn Station, which is the Ironbound District, a big time Portuguese area which was quite festive. It was fun walking through there, and we saw an all girl band called "Teens at Risk" playing which was amusing. Some of the group got "Teens At Risk" tee shirts. We continued on walking, and Ferry Street joined Market Street, which we continued to follow. We made a brief wrong turn up one street, but soon made our way to the Truck Rt 1 and 9 bridge for Lincoln Highway. Before crossing the bridge over the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers (I think) we climbed around on a billboard. We crossed on the left, or north side, and Mike Salender joined us on the east end. He had crossed the bridge, but on the south side. Once on the other side, we joined and headed up Lincoln Highway before turning left into Lincoln Park. We walked several streets from Lincoln Park heading generally northbound through Jersey City. I can't even remember which ones, because of my intoxication, but it was pretty close to the correct route. Mike knew it well. When we got to a crosswalk at one point, I was laughing histerically and was laying in a garbage can, and DJ Ray was trying to hold me up. A cop drove by when I was at the height of this, and DJ Ray said "It's okay, we're just screwing around". The cop continued on fortunitely. We continued north toward Journal Square, but made a side trip to Mike Salender's house to use the restrooms. Mike's house was very impressive, and he had a library of his own taking up the bottom floor. We continued from here passing historic structures and began to make our way back to the south, and east toward Liberty State Park. We began following Newark Avenue. I think we continued down to Monmouth Street to Mercer Street, and we took a couple block detour to follow the route of the trail passing city hall I think it was, but I really can't remember. We headed south onto Jersey Avenue and crossed the former Morris Canal at the west end of the Morris Canal Big Basin, then got to Audrey Zapp Drive. From here, the trail went east, or left, but many of us took a turn to the right first to visit a church David Noble's great grandfather had preached in for thirty years. We wandered out and turned left on Pine Street. The church was on the corner of Pine and Communipaw. I think now it's called Fountain Salvation Christian Church. We made our way around the block and headed back to Audrey Zapp Drive heading into Liberty State Park. DJ Ray, Christina, Ira, and Herbig decided to walk to the train station to get back to the cars quicker. The rest of us continued on the paved pathways out to the former Central Railroad of NJ Terminal. It was a beautiful piece of architecture, quite amazing. I had only been here once before. We walked around the old terminal and then on the Hudson River Walk to the south. We looped back around the edge of the park, and then made a loop back through the middle to Audrey Zapp Drive, just about completing the Liberty-Water Gap Trail. Technically, I'd found out the trail ended further down in the park where the statue was more in view, but we opted to just get out of there while we had a little daylight. The sun was setting which was absolutely marvelous. We continued out to the Jersey City Light Rail station, and hopped the train northbound to a station called Exchange Place. From here, we took another train west to get back to Newark. We did'nt know where to go to get to it, and we hung out climbing around on a statue and walking around till we found it.  While riding this train, we somehow found out that DJ Ray, Christina, and Herbig were on the same train! They had stopped to eat, and so did'nt get back to the cars earlier! Once the train stopped, we got out and had to figure out where to go. We found our way to the Newark Ligh Rail, and took the train to the Branch Brook Park station. From here, I did'nt know where to go to get back to where we started. Fortunitely, a kid on a bike told us which way to go to get into Branch Brook Park. We walked very quickly back on the trail and a parallel road, and I kept getting too far ahead. DJ Ray called the police to make sure our cars were safe; the signs said that we had to be out by 10 pm. I called Fred to see if he thought it would be a problem, and he did'nt think so. We made a wrong turn off the trail at one point, but we found out way back to it. We got back to the cars at 9:46 pm! More than 12 hours after starting! What a day!!!
