For this one we were planning on hiking from Otter Hole to Rt 23 on the Highlands Trail but the mileage was a bit longer than I'd anticipated so we cut it short because Sue and Fred had worked out their own car shuttle at Clinton Road.

Starting from Otter Hole, a nice waterfall, we headed north on the main trail from the road to the Highlands Trail, turned left, and immediately began the ascent of Buck Mountain which had some nice views. NY City was even in sight. We continued around the rocks along the trail through mixed hardwoods and began a gradual descent to the Gordon Lakes, a nice little lakefront community. The Gordon Lakes themselves were sort of attached with large separate bodies. The trail took us along back roads to the end of a dead end, then entered Newark Pequannock Watershed property near Indian Trail Lake I think it was called, which was very pretty.

We continued along, and the biggest thing I can remember along the route were the stone walls and gateway to what I believe was a hotel or resort area, but nothing is left of it. We continued from here to Echo Lake, a long large lake which the trail goes more than half way around.

We stopped for a lunch break near the dam at the south side. Joe I believe went ahead with Amish Paul, not wanting to stop. When the rest of us got back on the trail we found something of an obstacle course for students, which despite signage saying not to, we had to play on.

We continued on, and I remember following a brief old road, and then the ascent up Bearfort Ridge was tough. When we got to the top we all took a break at the fire tower. I know Martin and I went up but not sure if anyone else did...

We continued on the Highlands Trail out to Clinton Road where Sue's car was. She took just about everybody I guess, and Martin and I walked Clinton Road south while the others would return to pick us up, so we were the only two who actually did about 15 miles. It was nice for it. We probably could have made it to Rt 23 but everyone was content to stop at this point.
