Hike #21; Portland to Washington

 Hike #21

Hike 21

Having come back into hiking in a very big way, I wanted to get more of my friends into

it. I was now in much greater shape than I was four months earlier, and more excited

about life. I would once again lead the Portland Hike.

Stretching at the beginning of the hike on the Colombia Portland Footbridge

My good friend Al Eisberg, who I walked with at graduation, and shared some of my

absurd humor, was absolutely terrific to hike with, was the only one to join. The energy

level through the entire day was high, and we had a blast the entire time.

We began by stretching on the footbrodge before heading over to Port Mart. As we made

our way south we climbed around on rail cars.

On the Delaware Trestle

When we reached Delaware, Al had a grilled cheese and we moved on southbound,

climbing around on everything.

Al walked behind the counter and posed for this picture with the old lady making his grilled cheese. She seemed shocked that he wanted to come back there, as seen on her face.

The Shrub of Might

Al tried to get this bulldozer going in Ramseyburg, but of course it didn't happen. They must have been working on the cell tower at this time.

When we reached the sand pit, there were a lot of people working. Not wanting to get

stopped, we ran across. Mid way across I tripped and fell, cutting my legs pretty badly. I

limped a bit for the rest of the hike, but was fortunitely alright.

This time, Al got pretty far ahead of me, because from the sand pit on south, there are a

lot of places where berries are plentiful and I always stop to eat!

Note that I gave Al a disposable camera on this one so he could take pictures of whatever he wanted...he took a lot of silly ones!

“The thing about the sand pit first of all, there was no one in sight so I opted for

not running, however Mike insisted. As Mike was running, he looked back to see me and

where I was. I warned him we did not need to run; there was no one in sight, he still

insisted. Once, when Mike was looking back, he had come to the top of a sand pile not

realizing as he was trying to incourage me to run, then just like the coyote in the road

runner cartoons Mike was over the edge of the cliff and running in air. Mike fell and

rolled down a 20ft high slope some distance. When I caught up to him he was bleeding

from the knee down, and still insisted that we run. Once agian I pointed out to mike there

is no one here. After this I believe that Mike hobbled a bit and then, tryinig to run and

then realized that it was a Sunday after i told him several more times and that most

laborers do not work on Sundays. This helped to slow mike down for the remainder of the

trip.” -Al

Yeah, I was hurting pretty bad, but it was still pretty happy...once I got all the dirt and

grime out of my cut. I did’nt know it was on a Sunday? I thought we were pulling a

weekday deal or something.

Here's where you can see all of the pics from this hike, taken with a disposeable camera.
