Hike #80

Peeps and I after the hike
Hike 80
1/13/3
For my 80th hike, I was joined only by Peeps. We opted to do the hike from Tranquility
to Oxford. This was to be similar to the time Mr. Shoe and I did this hike, as there was
about the same amount of snow on the ground. The worst difference about this day was
that there was terrible biting wind.

Beginning in Tranquility NJ

Old LHR railroad bed in Long Bridge near the Rt 90 underpass

Ball fields just off of the railroad bed, Alphano NJ

We left Peeps’ car at the Tranquility Post Office and headed south through the snow. We
were bundled up pretty good. Cathy insisted that we each have a scarf, and I’m glad we
took them. Much of the rail bed was easily walkable because snowmobiles had packed it
down, while others were quite bad.
When we reached Alphano, the open fields slammed us with brutal winds. We made a pit
stop under a dugout for a ballfield along the right of way. We also soon checked out an
abandoned old truck.
I was a bit nervous as we passed by the trailer just beyond the sod farm. The owner has
his lot decorated with No Trespassing signs, and statures of deer holding guns!
After passing through Great Meadows, my knee was killing me. I was in such pain I did
not know if I could finish the hike. Still, I plugged on, and it soon gave me enough relief
that I could deal with it.
Peeps and I strayed from the right of way at one point to check out the ruins of a farm.
We went into the buildings, which were falling apart quite a bit. If there was anything
interesting on the floor, we surely missed it due to the snow cover.
We continued to Oxford without incident.
