Hike #75; Wharton State Forest

 Hike #75

John, Eric, and Rich on the Batona Trail

This was another interesting time. I had already set up the formula for my hikes, to connect every hike with something I'd already done and basically see how far I can get in a life time. Still, some things are tough to wait for. I'd canoed with Rich in the Pine Barrens before and loved it, and I really did'nt get to do that much hiking. So this time, I turned it over to Rich to come up with a hike for the group and I would work to connect it later (and I did). Unfortunitely, Rich and Eric were the only "core groupers" to attend. It went well and I would in the future turn over leadership to some other core group people at times, which usually turned out great!

For this one, Rich Pace arranged a section hike in Wharton State Forest of the Pine

Barrens far in south Jersey.

We began I believe at Rt 532 near Paisley, and walked south to Carranza on the Batona

Trail, and then west along a branch of the CNJ RR to Atsion. Eric, and one of Rich’s

friends, also joined.

We began hiking the Batona Trail, (A Philidelphia hiking club project, meaning BAck TO

NAture) across the sandy flats and pine needle strewn ground to Apple Pie Hill, where we

climbed a fire tower. After this we continued on the trail which used footpaths and

sometimes sand roads on the way to the Carranza Memorial, where Rich’s friend left his

car. The Carranza memorial is the site of a plane crash years ago. I don’t know a whole lot

about it yet...

Just past Carranza, we reached the CNJ tracks, overgrown but still in place. We followed

them across the Batsto and Mullica Rivers on the way to Atsion.

It was definietely an interesting hike, different from anything I usually do!

the final pictures include an abandoned building at Atsion, and the Mullica River.
