Hike #35; Lower Worthington State Forest

 Hike #35

Hike 35

On top of Mt Tammany

6/24/1

With Peeps and Alf both building interest in the hikes, I decided to lead the lower

Worthington section hike again. Tea Biscuit was also available for this one again. We did

the same as the previous time, ascending the Red blazed Tammany Trail to the top of Mt

Tammany and a terrific view of the Delaware Water Gap. At the top, we met a woman

who was also planning on doing twenty miles that day, but she did’nt join us.

Making our way along the Tammany Fire Road was different looking as it was much

younger foliage than the previous trip, making everything a brighter green. Along the way,

we were even able to see the Paulins Kill Viaduct a bit.

When we made our way down the access road to Upper Yards Creek Resevoir, Peeps

climbed to the top of the giant pipe used to carry the water between the upper and lower

resevoirs. I don’t know how he got up there!

We headed to the boy scout camp, and made our way up Kaiser Road, goofing off in a

stream on the way. We also checked out the abandoned building mid way up.

When we reached the AT we headed north to Coppermines Trail and descended to the

mines, first goofing off in the waterfalls.

We visited a mine shaft off trail, and then went in

the upper mine, but not to the back because we forgot flashlights. We made our way back

up the other side of Kaiser Road to the AT, and headed to Mt Mohican, and beyond to

Sunfish Pond, where we stopped to swim for a good while.

We made our way back down to the parking area along Dunnfield Creek as we did the

last time, first stopping to swim at a terrific pool below a little falls.

When we reached

where the AT rejoins Dunnfield Creek Trail, Alf decided to run the entire distance back to

the Camaro. We could see him making the corners quickly from afar along the creek. I

don’t know what got into him, after twenty miles even!

When we reached the car, I was trying to finish off my roll of film. There were two young

girls sitting in a car nearby, and Peeps and Tea Biscuit wanted to get their pictures taken

with them, so they went to ask them. I was surprised that they agreed, but I later found

out that they told the girls that Alf and I wanted our pictures with them, though it was

Peeps and Tea Biscuit who got their pictures taken with them. A funny end to a great

hike.

hike. What a riot! Wow, was the water cold...so refreshing though.” -Peeps
