 Hike #334 3/15/8

3/15/8 Lake Nockamixon (Haycock)-Perkasie with "Amish Paul" and Wyatt Hassler, Jennifer Heisey, Shaina Jordan, Ira Rubenstein, Marge Brennan, Amy French, "Naaron" Young, Russ Moyer, Ron Phelps, Gerry Martiniak, Beverly Auvil, and David Noble

Nockamixon State Park

My next hike would be in part some new scouting, but also covering some stuff I'd already done for the benefit of Jennifer Heisey, who was working on the Highlands Trail project.

I wanted her to see the southern end of Lake NOckamixon and a route I'd proposed for the future trail to take into Perkasie and Sellersville PA. We met in the morning in a park along the East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek at the Sellersville/Perkasie border on East Park Ave (which is also Constitution Ave), and shuttled cars to the Haycock boat launch at Nockamixon State Park. Joining me this time were Jen Heisey, "Amish Paul" and Wyatt Hassler, Gerry Martiniak, Beverly Auvil, "Naaron" Young, Russ Moyer, Ron Phelps, Ira Rubenstein, David Noble, Marge Brennan, and newcomers Amy French and Shaina Jordan. I had Amish Paul shuttle Gerry and Beverly to the beginning so they could spot a car, and then we all headed to Haycock boat launch. We headed out to the northeast end of the lake, and began heading down the unofficial trail along the shore, which was nice as it has been in the past. We had to come out to a road via a field at one point as we had in the past, and then cut back into the woods from an access road at the main dam for the resevoir. There were a lot of people there checking out the dam because they were letting water out of the resevoir. It was quite noisy and the torrents of water were something cool to see. We went down hill off the trail to have a closer look and we climbed onto the balanced rock along the hillside as well. I had wanted to get onto it in the past, but did'nt until this time. I was still apprehensive, but Ron and Wyatt went out on there first. We continued south to the road and crossed Tohickon Creek on the bridge along the south shore, then headed out to the trail that led along the fence line overlooking the dam area of Lake Nockamixon, which resembled a staircase. We walked around passing the dam and then continued along the southern shore of the lake. Some of the trail was rather nice, where it was narrow anyway, but a lot of it including the Elephant Trail was rather boring at times. Near the end of Elephant Trail, Amish Paul pulled his bicycle out of the weeds which he'd stashed there earlier in the morning. He rode the rest of the way. We continued out to the road, and followed some of the roads to get to the next off road section. We passed the district park office and then continued southwest crossing Rt 313 directly on Three Mile Run Road. We continued down that road till we reached a piece of land that showed on my maps as public, and we turned left into it. There was some sort of old woods road in there, but not too easy to follow. We ended up walking out to a cleared area where a school was visible to the left (R B Diebler Elementary School), and fields to the right. In the distance to the southwest I could see some lights that were part of a park, so we cut across toward those knowing that we would have an easier time walking. We soon came to a paved perimeter path arond this park, and followed it for a ways. Naaron and I were doing the "community pack" thing, and Wyatt was supposed to help us on that too, having put his water in, but he did'nt all day. I finally left my pack and made him carry it. He did'nt at first, but he ran back to get it. We continued out to the main road down to I think it was Schwenk Mill Road. We headed down hill on the road on a hairpin turn, then continued straight downhill to Branch Road I think it was. We followed this and soon a paved trail appeared on the right which followed closely the East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek. Amish Paul, still using his bike, passed the bike off to Wyatt, Ira, and Ron who took turns on it, and seemed to be having quite a good time. I mostly chatted with Jen as we continued on. We passed by Mood's Covered Bridge (covered bridges are always welcome sites) and eventually passed over to the south side of the Perkiomen Creek on a footbridge. We stayed on that side of the creek to the end off Constitution Ave. Most everyone headed off while the rest of us wandered across the street to have some dinner at a little pizza place in the strip mall. We had a nice time hanging out here for a couple hours before heading home.

In Sellersville area I think.
