 Hike #327 1/27/8

1/27/8 Woodbridge-Elizebeth with Wyatt Hassler, "DJ Ray" Cordts, Jack Lowry, Shelly Janes, "Naaron" Young, and Bernie Lieberman

This trip was another urban east NJ hike to connect us between a hike I did beginning in Elizebeth, and others we did in the vicinity of Rahway. Because there was no good parking I could find in Rahway, we parked in Woodbridge at the train station.

Joining me this time were Wyatt Hassler (his dad dropped him off), "Naaron" Young, and newcomer Bernie Lieberman. We began walking from here on city streets east under the NJ Transit tracks to Rt 514 north. We simply followed the roads for some time, stopping at Dunkin Donuts along the way for restrooms and food. From here, we continued north toward Rahway. We soon reached Rahway State Prison, which was a really nice piece of architecture with a dome, unlike how I pictured it would be. Directly across the street from it was a flea market which we opted to check out. We wandered through, and most of us ended up getting something or another. I got a cd for Cathy for Valentines day coming up, I don't know what DJ Ray got, Naaron bought a digital camera for three dollars, and Wyatt bought an Isaac Hayes Shaft soundtrack record which he carried the entire time! Some guy told DJ Ray he should make more of his walking sticks and sell them, which who knows, maybe he'll do it! We wandered out of the market area and then headed north into Rahway, and we walked out and back on the nice riverfront park trail we'd used on the previous hike (only with more daylight now). We continued from there up roads and parallel with the railraod tracks passing the old Merck buildings, now abandoned. We continued for some time, and we were joined in Linden by Shelly Janes and Jack Lowry at a little mini mart. We continued from here heading east along streets following a brook. We turned right on Stiles Street and then left on I think it was West Linden Ave which took us over a creek that had some sort of a greenway on it. The creek was being carried in a concrete flume like that of the LA River in California. We walked along the north side of it, then turned left on Munsell Avenue, then crossed Stimpson Avenue entering John Russel Wheeler Park along side the creek. We followed the creek out to Rt 1 and head to head south to cross at a stop light, then headed along parallel streets following the Morse's Creek as closely as possible to Morses Mill Road. We headed down the street and Jack showed us his warehouse for his Strikesound music equipment, then we headed up along other roads back to Rt 1. I wanted to cut into Rose Hill Cemetary, but we could'nt get in because the gates were all lockes. We continued along the road and cut into the cemetary as soon as we could. Jack was playing all sorts of songs, including "My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison, kind of funny being in a cemetary. The next adjacent cemetary, Mt Calvary Cemetary, was not accessable from the one we were in, so we had to go back, come out to Rt 1, and then go into the next cemetary. Fortunitely this one was easy to walk into and get out on the other side. We opted to walk Rt 1 from here across Rt 278 on ramp and turned right on Tuxedo Place, paralleling the freeway on several roads, and cutting across a church parking area. We stopped at a mini mart before making our way to Bayway Ave which we used to cross I-95. There were signs across the bridge that read "No Pedestrians" though there was a sidewalk. This road led us out into an area where we had a great view of the Goethal's Bridge, and we soon passed under it to get to South Front Street, which passed through some sort of oil refinery area. No one was there really, and probably no one knows it's open to public. We continued on along this to the north until we reached an awesome truss bridge which was intended to lift using a giant slab of concrete for weight displacement. We met a guy here who gave us some history of the area and the bridge, which he explained was designed by the same guy that designed the Golden Gate in California. He told us about his youth programs and how he hosted boating trips. After chatting we continued across the bridge and reached some beautiful parkland along the Arthur Kill Waterfront which had a great view of the Bayonne Bridge. We went around a gate and entered the park area which was very  nice and had spectacular views. We could also see the Goethal's Bridge from here. We continued along the waterfront but soon had to go back to Front Street because there was a fence. On the other side we could get back toward the waterfront and there was even a nice trail. This trail stayed pretty close to the water the entire way, and it seemed that a rail bed was parallel with us for most of the time. We were able to continue with great views all the way to what I think used to be the Singer Sewing Machine building, where we had to go back out to roads that took us around the outside of the building heading west. We left the roads as we continued and made our way to the railroad tracks, where I thought we'd be able to get to head west to Elizabeth easily, but such was not the case. We walked the tracks north for a bit and then descended looking for a way off. We found a back way into a junk yard, and then a dirt frontage road. We continued along the frontage road which took us to a construction area along the NJ Turnpike, and there was only one road we could ascend to. I decided we needed to try to follow the frontage road back in the direction we'd come from to get out. Sure enough, this frontage road took us out to Schiller Street which led to Dowd Avenue which we used to get under the Turnpike. That became York Street, which led us to Division Street taking us south to a right, heading west on East Grand Street. While on York Street, it was cool to go past the Wakefern Headquarters where all the Shop Rite stuff comes out of. Being a past Shop Rite employee it was kind of neat. We continued on the road out to Broad Street in the middle of Elizebeth, and then passed under the beautiful stone arches for the railroads. We ascended from here to the railraod station platform and bought our tickets back to Woodbridge, and ended up having to wait for over an hour for the train to come. Jack played guitar and I sang a bit to make the time pass by. We all made it back to Woodbridge fine, though Jack and Shelly got off at Linden. They drove down to meet us for dinner at the famous Rio Diner in Woodbridge which was quite good.
