The original journal for this hike was unfortunitely lost as well. I'll try to remember.
We started this hike at the Ted Stiles Preserve, Baldpate Mountain in Mercer County. It was a pretty new park so I wanted to explore it and saw a good opportunity to connect it up with Washington's Crossing State Park. We walked up the edge following some nice trail work and there were tiny views over the countryside up there. Some of the trails were old woods roads. Amish Paul had his bike with him and he let me ride it for a bit through the fields. It had been a long time since I'd ridden one so it was neat.
We soon came to some abandoned buildings, including a nice old house but there was no way in to look around.
We continued following the trail system around. At one point we got sort of lost and forunitely Joe, always astute, noticed the turn we needed to take. We walked by a foundation and chimney from a house, and as I recall bushwhacked a bit and came out on a road near Washington's Crossing to the north along someone's yard.
We crossed into the state park along some nice little ponds and then sort of followed the perimeter of the park to the left. When we got to the Continental Lane where Washington's Army was to have marched, we followed it towards the crossing site. We also took a break at an amphitheatre along the way.
We continued to the Washington's Crossing bridge and headed into PA. At the visitor's center on the other side I talked to the people working about Frank Dale's books which were new and popular, Bridges Over the Delaware and Delaware Diaries. They told me there was an unveiling of a statue or something going on in Prallsville NJ so I called Frank up and left him a message about it.
While we were in the center, Delotto went out and met a new girl, and lived up to his reputation of picking up a different girl on every hike! We all stood in the visitor's center laughing at the master seduction at work.
We walked across a bit field too, and Joe found a kite to fly. Soon though the kite's owners came and reclaimed it.
As we headed north, we got onto the Delaware Canal towpath. It seemed like we wouldn't find a way into it because the fields went on forever.
We continued and found the towpath, staying on it till we reached Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve. We paid a couple of bucks and went up to do the tour of it. It was beautiful, with everything in full bloom. We then walked back down and continued on the Delaware Canal north, now joined by Gerry's wife Beverly.
This section was still officially closed due to flooding, but it was fine for walking. When we walked into New Hope we took in the sights walking slowly, but then headed across the bridge back into Lambertville. I think the hike ended up being 19.7 miles.
And that's all I remember. Anyone remember anything I might have missed?
