Hike #266 1/28/7
Another fun one to look back at...a few newcomers, but most significantly JACK! This was in the days before carrying a guitar while hiking was customary!

My next hike would be yet another beach area hike, in the next section beginning in Long Branch, heading to the south side of Sandy Hook, then returning. We met in the morning at the Long Branch train station; Major Tom kindly drove me down there with him. When we arrived at the Long Branch station, we met up with Fred Hafale and David Campbell (who I would give the nickname "Captain Soup" to, since his last name is Campbell), as well as newcomers Jim Campbell (Captain Soup's Uncle), Janet Freid, Jack Lowry, and Andrea Waye with her full size poodle, Bailey I think his name was. We began walking the nearest road out to the beach. As soon as we reached the beach, we began walking north.

We followed the beachfront north from Long Branch where we could see a lot of the newly developed and recently opened section of boardwalks and businesses. We continued crossing a couple jettis, but it was pretty open and clear otherwise, with no real obstacles in the way. Fred and I both got our feet wet by walking too close to the water. I drank a couple of strange Belgian style beers that Ron Phelps gave me earlier in the week, brewed in Easton; I think they were called Weyerbacker. They were pretty good! By the time we got to Sea Bright, Andrea decided to turn back with her dog, so the rest of us continued on to the north. It seemed like no time before we reached Highlands Beach, the southern end of Sandy Hook.

The Twin Lights were within view up on the hill for a while before that. We made our way out to Rt 36, and Captain Soup and I immediately decided to walk on top of the sea wall rather than on the roads. A few followed suit. We were able to walk on top of the sea wall all the way to Sea Bright where we had to climb down. We continued on the road until we reached a place called Icubod's I think it was.

We went in there to have lunch. It was great having this long stop. We all had some food and beer; I had a terrific huge burger. We stayed there for over an hour before we continued on. After leaving, we walked up the street a bit and stopped in a little place, called Donovan's I think, that Major Tom wanted us to see, where Bruce Springsteen plays on occasion. It was a nice little boardwalk place with a stage and a view of the ocean. We simply walked through and continued along sea walls and on the some boardwalk to the south. We also crossed a bridge over the Shrewsbury River at one point to get the view, don't remember exactly when. As we continued south, Fred decided to stay on the street while the rest of us continued close to the ocean. We had to walk through some messed up building's property in order to get back toward the street. I saw little to no remnants of the former CNJ Railroad; it must have been obliterated due to the construction of some of the newer homes and businesses on the west side of the strip between the ocean and the river. We finally made our way onto the boardwalk, where the newly opened sections with businesses were. We walked around one of the buildings, down some steps, and around some palm trees, giving us a sort of Florida feeling. We soon turned back inland toward the Long Branch station to finish the hike. We did almost exactly 15 miles, as was planned. Fred's GPS came out at almost 15, but he did'nt do the few outs and backs the rest of us did at the end, so we were pretty much dead on. Aside from the Garden State Parkway's pay booth not accepting Major Tom's payment correctly, we rode home with a great feeling.
