Hike #26
Hike 26

At Manunka Chunk Tunnel in our Star Trek uniforms!
10/29/2k
A lot of changes occured in the month previous to this hike. In this time, Cathy and I decided to move in together, in a house at 62A Summit Avenue in Phillipsburg. Though we had not moved in yet, we spent a considerable amount of time cleaning and working in the house. I had not led a hike in a month.

On the Portland Colombia foot bridge
With Halloween on it’s way, I thought it would be funny if Tea Biscuit and I did the hike from Portland in our Star Trek Uniforms. I always got a kick out of wearing them to High School so it seemed only natural to mess with people by hiking in them.

My grandmother once again dropped us off in Colombia, and we made our way south. When we crossed on or nearby roads, people would honk at us; we were even asked if we were on our way to a convention.

We stopped to use the pay phone at Smiddy’s to call and find people to join us; I don’t remember who we called anymore.

After crossing the driveway over the right of way before Manunka Chunk, a couple were walking about near their car along the pathway. To our surprise, the asked us where we could find Christmas trees, seeminly unphased by our futuristic appearance.

We decided not to pass through either of the tunnels on this trip, passing over top on both. At Manunka Chunk, we made our way on an ATV trail to an open field and three obvious routes: to the left through a line of trees, to the right up through another field, or straight along the treeline. We headed off into the woods near the end of the field, because I did not know at the time that a path existed at the field’s corner. Most times when participants in my hikes had gotten lost going over the tunnel, they turned right at the field. This time, Tea Biscuit and I made our way into a low lying flood plain and jumped over Catherine’s Run. I had been here with my grandfather before. He dropped his glasses into the creek years ago and I managed to find them.

On Manunka Chunk Mountain

In the fields near Sarepta
Conitnueing on, we made our way along the farm road palrallel to the right of way to Sarepta.
When we reached the sand pit, it was such a mess that we could not make our way across to the right of way, though the upper portion which had previously been dug out was leveled flat! I had assume that maybe the railroad bed would be made a trail and that a stipulation was that it needed to be restored. Such was apparently the case in Delaware NJ where years before a fill needed to be restored.

Because we could not reach the right of way immediately, we made our way up an ATV trail which ran parallel. We climbed around on a deer stand, then continued on the path which led us back to the right of way near Buttsville. We stopped at another pay phone here to try to get people to join us, to no avail. We made our way back to washington, in under six hours.
