Hike #233 8/22/6
Fun hike to look back on, my mom and Mark were refurbishing the house and I got some good shots of it as we began walking from there.

Hike 233; 8/22/6
For this next hike, a Tuesday one, Cathy and I planned on hiking from home to the Lopatcong Shop Rite. I had wanted to explore the abandoned Edison Concrete Plant along the way. We started getting ready to leave after dropping Cathy's car in Lopatcong Township Shop Rite, and as we walked out the door my mom called us over to their house next door.

I went over and was surprised to see my mom seemed to have a new open porch, actually the roof had just been removed and they were in the process of ripping the back of the house off due to deterioration from termites. It looked very strange. Cathy and I were soon on our way, walking to the end of our road and across the highway to the former Morris and Essex Railroad westbound. We passed through Washington and Franklin Townships heading west. We got off the tracks and followed a farm road parallel only briefly through Broadway. I was constantly testing out my new digital Nikon Coolpix L2 camera. I knew we were coming up on Edison Concrete sometime soon, but I did'nt know how to get in. We had just passed a chicken farm, but I did'nt know how to get in. I called my brother Alex up, who was still at work, and he told me that the motorcycle paths past the Chicken farm would take me in there. We began walking along the paths which led us to an incredible concrete structure towering out of the weeds. There was a huge corridoor between parts of this building we walked through and back, and then we walked along the building heading west. The last section of this building had an open door, so we went in. There were lots of concrete columns and broken concrete chips all over the floor. I concluded that this area once had a cement ceiling that had deteriorated and collapsed. There were a few sections of it still in place, otherwise it was only the supports still standing. We left this building and headed along a path leading us across a concrete road and to a huge complex of buildings. We checked out the first building we found, then walked around it to the right of way of the spur line railroad that accessed the area. We walked along it between two buildings, one a large one with windows, the other a triple silo style building with a ladder going up into it. I checked out a lower level building to the right, then came out to check out the building on the left with a series of stairs leading to the second floor. I walked up and had a look at the view from the top. Cathy was waiting below until I told her to come join me. We headed through the top and out onto a section of the roof. We had a look around and then came back down and walked through the lower level, which was incredible. We exited the building and headed back to the tracks. We walked another concrete road to an ATV path to th tracks. We walked out and across Edison Road on a bridge where the first bit of paved concrete road in the United States was in view. We continued out to Stewartsville area and walked along roads to the center of the town where we stopped in a little store for some food and drink. We then walked a paved walkway along New Village Road out of Stewartsville to the Lopatcong Shop Rite where we finished walking.
