Hike #208; Ghost Lake to Mountain Lake

 Hike #208 3/12/6

Group taking a great at the Jenny Jump visitor's center

3/12/6

This time, my plan was to once again do the Jenny Jump Hike I had first done yearsbefore with Tea Biscuit and Rich and Eric Pace. I had spoken with the State Forest peoplewho told me that a new trail was nearly complete, and would eliminate the long road walkI used to do.

My group met me at Mountain Lake, and we car shuttled to Ghost Lake on Shades ofDeath Road. Joining me this time were past participants Fred Hafale, Bill Jacobsen, Jim“Mr. Buckett” Mathews, Steve Sanbeg, Ira Rubenstein, Dave Finton, Gerry Martiniak, and Beverly Auvil, as well as newcomers, Steve’s girlfriend Haiyen Zheng, Silvia Smullen, and Amaya ?. I was surprised with the good turnout despite the fact that it was rainingquite a lot. We began walking along the shore at Ghost Lake, stopping by at the Fairy Hole, and Itold everyone some of the area’s history. We continued off-trail up to the Ghost LakeTrail, following it to the site of the cabin, with somewhat of a view. It was more obviousthis time where the location was, as my last visit here was in the snow. The foundationwas still there, but I was still terribly sad to see it was gone.

Where the cabin used to be on Jenny Jump Mountain

We continued along Ghost Lake trail to Summit Trail over the ridge. The views wereterrific. Next, we walked out the Swamp Trail to Spring Trail. In the past, I had not usedthe Spring Trail, but this time I wanted to in order to add mileage we would have lost onthe new trail section. The Spring Trail was very steep, but everyone made it alright. Wecrossed the Summit Trail where we’d just been and made our way along the lower ridge, coming back around to the cabins. There was a nice restroom we decided to use, withshowers inside! I decided to needed to take a shower and sing a bit. Ira laughed as I walked out soaked. We soon reached the park office, and I gave everyone the option to stay put if they’d likewhile I led part of the group to do another loop. Only Mr. Buckett, Steve, Gerry, and I asI recall opted to do the full loop. I think I might be wrong..... We began by walking the park road to the campsites, and Steve climbed a large rockalong the way. We continued to the Orchard Trail and descended to the nice view of thewater gap, which was pretty obscured this time, unfortunitely. We looped back to StatePark Road and I called Dave up on his cell phone to let everyone know to get ready. Wetook off from the park office up the road to a park road with a cul de sac. At the end ofthe road, the new trail led into the woods. Mr. Buckett began dancing around with hisumbrella. The new trail had one more trail break off to the left, and we continued straightover the ridge, sometimes on woods road, then onto narrow trail. There was oneviewpoint along the route, which was unfortunitely obscured by clouds. I’m certain itprobably would have been a nice view of Hope.  The trail eventually led us down hill and over a creek, then around the outside of a ridgebefore making it’s way down to county route 611. We walked up the road to theviewpoint, which was starting to get a bit better. We then continued to the turn on HissumRoad, which we followed to Lake Just It Road then turned right back to Mountain Lake.No one was interested in doing the loop on the Mountain Lake Trail, so this was the end.
