Hike #191; Warren Railroad

 Hike #191

One of the many times on the Portland hike...this one was hike 191!

9/11/5

Warren Railroad with Cathy Fisher, Fred Hafale, Julie Satmari, Jim "Mr. Buckett" Mathews, Dave Finton, and John Spiridon

I lost this journal entry to the fire as well.

Here's what I remember....

I was the following week headed out west with my then girlfriend Cathy to help her eliminate a storage space we were paying rent on. I wanted to get it out of the way so I would no longer have to keep working at Taylor Rental which was draining me badly.

For my last hike before what was planned originally to be September through January, I knew I wanted to do my original Warren Railroad hike again. We did'nt get a huge showing, but it was okay, and it was a good group of people who had become my "core group" at the time.

As usual, after meeting at Port Colden Mall she shuttled vehicles to Colombia and began walking the railroad south. Everything went normally; Julie did'nt like bridge crossings but for me on this hike she braved the Delaware trestle.

We stopped at Smiddy's Deli as always, and continued along the rail bed, only this time we skipped the Shrub of Might because at the time the area was very well signed and the path was almost gone on the rail bed above since the cell tower was built nearby. Instead we walked this short distance along Rt 46 and I wandered into the cemetary to find some of graves of my relatives.

When we reached Manunka Chunk Tunnel I think only John, Mr. Buckett, and I went through. Dave, Fred, Cathy, and Julie went over.

We continued to the south without much incident, and I think when we reached Oxford none of us went through the tunnel, opting instead to walk over the top along Rt 31.

The remainder of the way back to Washington was also pretty clear except the section just north of Jackson Valley Road which was getting weedy a bit.

It was hard for me to think I would'nt lead a hike for over four months ahead of me, but that was not to be the case although I did'nt know it at the time...
