Hike #183

On Cushetunk Mountain

8/7/5

Round Valley with Fred Hafale, Jim Delotto, Fred Mader, Steve Sanbeg, Felisa Kulba, Jude Shabrach, and John Spiridon

This is another one the original journal got lost to the fire..

The only newcomer as I recall was Fred Mader.

We met in the morning at a township park on Sand Hill Road near Round Valley Resevoir and shuttled cars around to the other side, Cushetunk Mountain Nature Preserve in Hunterdon County.

From here, we started walking up the main trail which led to the top of Cushetunk Mountain. I had never followed the trail along the ridge to the right from here, or north, which the state park map showed going through, so we went this time. It let to a chain link fence, and so we followed this down hill to the side of the resevoir because the map showed a trail going along down here as well. We could'nt really find it, but we continued back south along the shore until a trail sort of showed up anyway. We then continued on the lower Cushetunk Trail around the resevoir, stopping for lunch at the pavilian along the shore. The lower trail, which I had'nt really hiked before just went by the campsites before rejoining the main Cushetunk Trail around the lake that I'd already followed.

We continued on this until we reached the visitor's center. I stopped and ran up the mowed path to the left that led to a view of the resevoir in the one direction, and south over Hunterdon in the other. We then headed to the beach area which was crowded bad. I went for a swim anyway and then we were off into the rest of the trail system. I think we followed Pine Tree Trail to the waterfront trail to continue around. Either way, we did get there and I took a dip in the resevoir for a bit. We continued along until we got to the levee near the boat launch. They had blocked this off since my last visit, but we just walked around it to get out. When we reached the other side's road, there was a ranger there that was friends with Fred so we chatted a bit. We then continued out and walked the road until we got to Sand Hill. From here, most everyone cut out except I think Fred Hafele, Fred Mader, Steve, and myself. We walked the perimeter trail, which pretty much just followed fields, through this preserve and back to the parking area.
