Hike #90; North Hunterdon Back Roads

 Hike #90

Hike 90

At Mountain Farm in the rain

5/11/3

For this hike, Tea Biscuit and I decided to walk a series of roads and trails from

Crestmoore to my grandfather’s house for dinner.

We were dropped off in Crestmoore, Morris County, and walked the High Bridge Branch

CNJ to Middle Valley, then walked up Middle Valley Road, which was incredibly steep,

but nice. It was very foggy, and it ranied a little. Middle Valley Road became dirt at the

top, which was very nice.

When we reached the end of the road, we made a left onto I think it’s Califon Road, but

I’m not sure, then we turned left onto Hollow Brook Road descending into Teetertown

Ravine. When we reached the Teetertown Preserve Trailheads, we walked a loop up and

back from the Mountain Farm. When we got back to the Ravine, we crossed the brook

and entered an undeveloped section of the preserve, where there was a quarry. We walked

around the old quarry and looked for remnants of the Middle Valley Railroad, a short line

that broke off the CNJ High Bridge Branch at Middle Valley. I believe we found some of

it as there were some level grades.

After exploring, we crossed back over the brook and walked down Hollow Brook Road

across a beautiful stone arch bridge. We crossed a few of these along the way; Hunterdon

County has more of these little stone bridges than anywhere else in the state, with over

200 of them!

We reached Teetertown and walked out to Sliker Road, and then to East Hill Road to

Woodglen. I think we stopped at the Woodglen Store but I can’t remember. We also

stopped at a little Lebanon Township Municipal park, but did’nt find any trails. We

walked in back of the municipal building and then headed to another road out to Anthony

Road. Along the way, we saw Uncle George Zack’s parents, and we stopped in their

house where they gave us more water to drink.

We walked Anthony Road, along the way stopping by the ruins of the Swack Hammer

Church, and walking around in the overgrown cemetary.

We then walked out to where Anthony Road becomes Hollow Road, to Mountain Top

Road and my grandfather’s house.
