Hike #165; North Hunterdon Back Roads and Trails

 Hike #165

It's neat to see how I was starting to take fewer pictures for so long, and then on this one, only my second trip after getting my first digital camera I doubled the amount I was taking!

Teetertown Bridge. One of the great little curiosities of Hunterdon County NJ is the fact that it has more stone arch bridges like this one, than anywhere else in North America. Over 200 of these structures are registered within the county. The County road department takes great pride in their work on these bridges; we've witnessed them standing, bundled up, in the streams, painstakingly repairing damages to bridges such as this one with great care and attention to detail.

For my next trip, I planned to do the north Hunterdon backroads hike I had not donesince hike #90 in May of 2003. This was a weekday hike, which usually would bring lightparticipation. Still, I posted it and got two participants, Gerry Martiniak, and newcomerVictoria Airgood. We met at Penwell, where I planned on finishing, and then shuttled upto the Teetertown Preserve. We parked at the Mountain Farm section, then walked along the trails as we had lasttime, but made our way dowhill early to Hollow Brook Road.

We walked the beautifuldirt road down across the stone bridge, then turned right onto Teetertown Road. It was abeautiful clear day, and I had posted that this would be mainly road walking, so bothGerry and Victoria were alright with it. We continued on Teetertown Road to SlikerRoad, then down to Hill Road, following it to Woodglen where we made a stop at theWoodglen General store for some refreshments. Our next stop would be in the Lebanon Township park, which was rather new, just on thesouth side of Woodglen. We walked into the park looking for trails or anything of interest, and what we found was far more than anything we had anticipated. What we found in thepark was a two story tall piece of the World Trade Center set up in a beautiful memorial. A Lebanon township resident died in the attacks on 9/11, and the municipality wasapparently able to get the piece because of it. There was another smaller piece with aplaque upon it nearby. We had a look around the park, then headed back out to Hill Road, then to Red Mill Road.

On the way, my Aunt Pam, who was a bus driver, was driving busdown the road, and stopped to say hello. We actually walked by her house shortly as weturned onto Newport Road. Newport Road is supposedly a road that strange things happen on when driving it late atnight. My mom tells me stories, though I’ve never had anything happen. I had a look upthe abandoned old road out toward the former Camp Watchung, which has an abandoendshell of a building on it, but we did’nt walk that route. I hoped that on future trips doingthis hike we would go this way, as at the time the land was being bought by HunterdonCounty as part of their new Michin Woods Preserve. We continued up Newport Road to Anthony Road and went left where it becomesHollow Road, then turned right onto Mt Top Road past my grandfather’s house, thoughunfortunitely he was’nt home.

We continued along Mountaintop Road downhill toMusconetcong River Road, then out to the Point Mountan Preserve. We hiked the maintrail from the bottom to the viewpoint, then out along the ridge to Penwell. I showedGerry and Victoria the rope swing I love so much before we finished.
