Hike #114; Phillipsburg/Riegelsville/Warren Glen

Hike 114

11/5/3

For my next hike, I was planning on doing a spot of walking with Bode again, and we met

in Frenchtown. Peeps also signed on, but we amended our plan and decided to make a

loop south of Phillipsburg. We left Bode’s car in Rieglesville, and planned on hiking from

Phillipsburg to there, while Peeps and I would continue to Warren Glen, following old

railroads back to town from there, though even that would not work as planned.

It was raining when we reached Union Square, Phillipsburg, and I gave Bode one of my

rain ponchos, which fit kind of tight.

As we made our way south of P Burg, we climbed around at an old underpass and around

on ladders as Tea Biscuit and I had done on our last visit. Since Peeps was with us,

climbing was certainly the secondary activity of this hike. He also climbed a tree stand and

a giant rock along the tracks.

In Carpentersville, I believe Bode found a pin with a number on it. These nails places in

railroad ties, as he explained signified the year the tie was placed, and were sought after

among rail fans. As I recall, Bode was happy to have one.

As we neared Rieglesville, we found a large abandoned concrete building which we of

course had to go inside. It was very open and we could not ascertain exactly what it’s use

would have been. Bode left us near the Rieglesville Bridge and Peeps and I continued

along the road into Warren Glen, spotting abandoned houses of the road near the

Musconetcong River. We did’nt bother going in partially because it had begun pouring

down rain. We made a stop in an antique shop along the way and browsed a bit. I think

that must have been in Finesville or something.

When we reached Warren Glen, we made a stop in a little convenience store, soaking wet

and tired. I think we must have ate some junk food and probably had some chocolate milk.

I considered calling Tara Hardman who lived in Phillipsburg at the time, but was able to

get through to Cathy who said she’s be out to pick us up. We continued to walk from

Warren Glen uphill on the road toward Bloomsbury, passing under the former Lehigh

Valley Railroad, which might have been our return route, and the grade crossing (which

was formally a rickety wooden bridge) of the abandoned CNJ main line. Cathy picked us

up here and returned us to our cars.
