Hike 304

My next hike would be another Tuesday afternoon trip with Cathy, this time in southern Sussex County, beginning with the Sussex Branch Trail from the corner of Waterloo Road and Continental Drive.

Highlands Trail at Lake Lackawanna area, now closed
We began walking north on the Sussex Branch trail passing Jefferson Lake and then the little waterfall near where it crosses the Highlands Trail, and Cathy liked it a lot. We continued north to Cranberry Lake where we stopped in the mini mart for some food and drink. After getting a Gatorade Rain beverage, and Cathy got a tea she did'nt like, we made our way north. We continued to the "Hole in the Wall" culvert in Whitehall and I took a picture of Cathy on the billboard along the right of way and we headed north further. We eventually came to the Lackawanna Cutoff and we climbed to the high fill to begin walking east. We continued along through the big cuts and fills out to the Roseville Tunnel, which freaked Cathy out a lot. I had to carry her on my back through because I could see, and she could not. We continued on the cutoff from the east side to Lake Lackawanna where we turned and followed the Highlands Trail southbound on a footpath. The trail led out to some woods roads then to a school in Byram Twp, terminating where it had my previous visit. We continued down Mansfield Drive to Lackawanna Drive and turned left. We walked by Wild West City and came out by the Byram Shop Rite where we went in and bought a cheap flash light. We then continued across the street into the little developement to reach the next section of the Highlands Trail. There was a band playing in a garage as we passed by. The Highlands Trail had been moved since my last visit onto a new, wide crushed stone surface bike path near the original trail entrance. The route took us down hill and over a little brook, then up hill on the other side. I could see where the HT turned off to the right on it's original route, but we opted to continue on the new trail, called Byram Trail (though the sign read "Trail Byram"). The pathway led us out to a sort of field area and a road, then took us along a berm along Jefferson Lake to the south out to another dead end road. It followed the road and reentered the woods leading around a knoll back to the Sussex Branch Trail a short distance north of the Sussex Branch Trail where we started.
